A Glance at the New Kona

Team One Hyundai Kona
In just four model years, the Hyundai Kona has risen to become perhaps the subcompact SUV to beat. It has an upscale cabin, provides a poised handling and comfortable ride, and an available turbocharged engine for better acceleration. The 2021 iteration is split into five trim levels, which are the following:
1. SEL
2. SEL Plus
3. Night (new for this model year)
4. Limited
5. Ultimate

Notably, the Night edition is a cosmetic package for the Kona, which is transformed with exclusive features such as gloss-black accents on the door handles and side mirrors, a black headliner, and 18-inch semigloss black wheels. A 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque hitched to a six-speed automatic transmission forms the vehicle’s drivetrain. Coupled with a front-wheel drivetrain, this vehicle delivers a peak fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. If you go with either the Limited or the Ultimate, the 2.0-liter is replaced by a smaller but more powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which outputs 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. In addition, this engine is hitched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for smoother shifts than what the six-speed automatic gearbox offers. There’s the option of upgrading to all-wheel drive for maximizing road grip. Small enough to maneuver in tight areas, the vehicle maintains its composure on winding roads, and it can soak up most small bumps on the road.As a five-seater, the 2021 Hyundai Kona provides two rows of cloth-trimmed seats to accommodate up to five people. Notably, the space between the rear seats and the liftgate has a dual-level floor to store smaller items, and the rear seats can be folded down to optimize the cargo space. At the SEL trim, Hyundai introduces front-seat heating and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The SEL Plus introduces eight-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat at the SEL Plus trim level. Leather seats are standard on the Limited and Ultimate models.

A 7-inch color touchscreen integrates infotainment features on the vehicle; such features include the following:
• Six speakers
• AM/FM radio tuner
• Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming
• Two USB ports and an audio jack for connecting portable devices
• Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration
In addition, the vehicle comes with remote keyless entry, which eliminates the need for an ignition key to gain access to the cabin. This is upgraded to a proximity keyless entry system at the SEL trim level for having the key fob on you to unlock the doors; this upgrade is accompanied by push-button engine start for more engine starting. Also appearing at the SEL trim level are HD Radio for digital tuning and a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio. At the SEL Plus trim level, the Kona gains the following:
• Wireless device charging
• Eight-speaker Infinity Premium Audio system (in place of the six-speaker setup)
• Blue Link Connected Car system, with three years of Connected Care and Remote packages for functions that include:
o Service reminders
o Diagnostic alerts
o Roadside assistance
o Monthly vehicle health reporting
o Remote start with climate control
o Remote lock/unlock
The Limited gains a rearview mirror that has auto-dimming ability and a garage-door opener. Only the Ultimate gets the following:
• Head-up display for reducing on-the-road distraction
• 8-inch color touchscreen (in place of the 7-inch)
• Navigation system
• Three years of the Blue Link Guidance package (in addition to Connected Care and Remote) for searching for up-to-date locations
For driver assistance, this vehicle starts with a rearview camera with rear parking sensors, front collision warning, driver attention warning, and lane keeping assist. If a crash occurs, the vehicle can deploy any of its six airbags, which consists of two frontal impact airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags. A blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert is added on the SEL trim and higher. Unique to the Ultimate trim are adaptive cruise control, parking distance warning, and pedestrian detection.
