First, let’s start with the basics. Your car has a certain number of gears, usually indicated by numbers on your gear shift. You may be wondering why there are letters on your gear shift. These letters mean the range of gears that your car has.

1. Parking (P)

The “P” on your gearshift stands for parking. When your car is in this gear, the transmission is locked, and the vehicle will not move. It is the safest gear to be in when you’re stopped and parked, as it prevents your car from accidentally rolling away.

To put your car in Park, push the gearshift to the position marked with a capital “P.” You’ll feel or hear a click as the transmission locks. Ensure your car is completely stopped before shifting into Park, as it can damage the transmission if you try to get into this gear while still moving.

2. Reversing (R)

The next letter on the gearshift is “R” for Reverse. This gear is only used when you’re backing up; it’s not meant to drive forward.
